Kumugara

2014

Kigali, Rwanda

In 2014, I resided 3 months in Central-African country Rwanda.

For my graduation project I had to choose a subject that was very close to me, but also did I want to discover new cultures and distance myself a bit from my Western habits and explore a country completely out of my comfort zone. As I had a background in working with people with disabilities I wanted to explore how they live and survive in a country with much less resources.

Kumugara means “living/surviving with disabilities” in Kinyarwanda.

When I reached out to Fracarita Belgium (ngo of Brothers of Charity), they proposed to go to Congo and/or Rwanda. As Rwanda was a small country (a bit like Belgium), I thought it would be practical to be able to travel short distances between my locations.

It was an honor to have met these people and them giving me the chance to build up connections. The images were used by Fracarita Belgium and have been on display on expositions on several locations.
